Made by hand.

La Pequeña offers handwoven textiles for daily life. Stain them, wash them, and use them again and again.

La Pequeña was started by Sara Collazo Romay, a floor loom weaver based in Kingston, NY.

Sara started weaving in an effort to reconnect with every step of the creative process: from designing, to making a warp, weaving and sewing each of her textiles by hand - using ancient weaving techniques with a contemporary sensibility to create timeless and functional pieces that will elevate any space.

La Pequeña was created to reclaim our every day moments.

I grew up in a coastal city in Spain, where I spent the majority of my childhood crossing the street between my father’s newspaper stand and my grandparent’s restaurant.

I spent countless hours sitting on the floor of the stand, reading every fashion magazine my dad sold, mesmerized by all the color, pattern and beauty. The other half I spent sharing meals with my family at the restaurant. This was the time where I got to see my uncles, aunts, and cousins - everyday at lunch, our full attention on each other.

As I grew up and moved far away, I found myself craving those mundane moments, reliving them in my mind. I realized that those small, seemingly insignificant times were quite literally the foundation of who I am today.

My textiles come from a very personal place. They are memories captured, meant to become part of your every day. They are the smell of your favorite dish, a candle lit, a worn in towel - the pieces of a puzzle that build a life overtime.

The Sum of Our Parts is an exploration of immigration and multiculturalism through woven cloth. 5 individual handwoven pieces will be displayed inspired by 5 interviews conducted with members of my family about their relationship to culture, race, place (immigration) and identity. While my family has a long-standing history of immigration (from the Dominican Republic to the rest of the world) and racial/cultural diversity (Afro-Latinos, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and beyond) we don't historically converse about our own experiences and how these shape our identities and the dynamics within our family. With this project, I hope to uncover each individual's experience and create a handwoven artwork in direct reaction to each conversation. Choosing to narrow my focus on my family members will hopefully illustrate how radically different racial experiences can be from one individual to the next, even within a single family unit. Selfishly, I also hope to learn how to navigate my own relationships with my racial background and experiences living in the US, miles away from the rest of my family.
